Consumer confidence up, reveals survey, as 20% of in-market car buyers look to buy car in the next four weeks despite Covid-19: A survey of in-market car buyers by consumer magazine, What Car? has found that consumer confidence is three times higher than it was during the first Covid-19 lockdown last March, with 20% looking to buy a vehicle within the next four weeks.
The research polled 2,939 in-market buyers during the first weekend of lockdown 3.0 about their plans for the coming weeks, also finding that almost a quarter (24.6%) are looking to buy a new car within one to three months.
When the first coronavirus lockdown happened in March last year, What Car's research found that just 3.5% were planning to buy a car within four weeks, and just 8% within a one-to-three-month timeframe. This research proved accurate with sales down by 97.3% in April 2020.
The latest research also found that more than half the respondents polled (54%) did not want to wait until lockdown measures are lifted and instead would buy a car even with showrooms closed.
Confidence in buying a car online was also up, with 42.9% saying they would be happy to purchase their next car this way, up from 35.2% in What Car's October research. The survey also found that around 90% of car buyers would feel comfortable collecting their new car using a 'click and collect' service.
