Apps downloads per user fall

August 2014

Apps downloads per user fall: The average number of being downloaded per user per month has declined considerably over the past twelve months, and almost a third of smartphone users in the UK do not download any apps on their smartphone in a typical month – a rise from fewer than one in five since 2013.

The survey, carried out by Deloitte, has found that among those who do download apps on their smartphone, the average number of apps they download has fallen from 2.32 to 1.82. The demand for paid apps appears to be even lower – with almost 9 in ten respondents stating that they never spend money on apps or other content for their smartphones.

Deloitte’s report suggests that the fall in the number of app downloads per user is due to the increased number of smartphone owners who are over the age of 50 and who have little or no interest in utilising their phone’s potential as a data device.

Paul Lee from Deloitte also suggested that another reason for the lower number of downloads per user is that individuals who have had smartphones for a number of months tend to have a preferred set of apps they use regularly – as well as established networks within a number of them, particularly social networking apps.

In another piece of research released recently, carried out by Google, it was suggested that the UK apps development market would be worth around $30 billion to the economy by 2025.
