Almost half young people polled in good energy survey would like careers in green economy

September 2020

Almost half young people polled in Good Energy survey would like careers in green economy: A survey of young people aged 18–34 years has found that 'green jobs' are highly desirable – with  45% believing that green economy careers will offer them a more secure future.

The survey of 1,000 young people commissioned by Good Energy found that jobs in renewable energy are becoming more attractive to young people, ranking 10% more attractive than being a social media influencer and 8% more attractive than a job working in the retail sector. Working in fossil fuels was the least attractive industry, according to the poll, with just 6% of respondents saying they would like to pursue a career in it.

The survey also found that the majority of young people polled would like to be employed by an environmentally sustainable business (57%)

When asked what they believe is the next big crisis facing the world after coronavirus, over half (58%) pointed towards climate change. The survey also revealed that almost half (49%) are worried about the impact Covid-19 will have on their future career.

The survey was produced for Earth Overshoot Day – an initiative of international research organisation, Global Footprint Network, which seeks to change the way the world measures and manages its natural resources.
