A third of people more likely to enter a shop or restaurant when Covid restrictions are lifted if mask wearing is still in place, finds survey

July 2021

A third of people more likely to enter a shop or restaurant when Covid restrictions are lifted if mask wearing is still in place: A survey has revealed insight into how people are feeling about shopping and eating out post Covid, with a third of people saying they will be more likely to enter a shop or restaurant if mask wearing is still in place.

Respondents were asked ahead of 19th July when Covid-19 restrictions were eased, whether they were more or less likely to enter a shop or restaurant if it insists on the wearing of face masks when inside – or whether it would make no difference to them.

The YouGov poll of 4,428 UK adults, which took place on July 14 2021, also found that nearly half (48%) said it would make no difference on their decision to enter, whether mask wearing was enforced or not. And for 14% of consumers polled, a venue insisting that customers should continue to wear masks post 'freedom day' would make them less likely to go in.

The survey also revealed a disparity between older and younger consumers when it comes to the wearing of facemasks after July 19th, with 41% of people aged 65+ saying they would be more likely to enter a venue if they were still required, compared to just 21% of 18 to 24 year-olds.

Respondents were also asked what they would do if they were wearing a mask at an indoor setting and then realised that nobody else was, with seven in ten (70%) saying they would keep their mask on and 12 % revealing it would prompt them to take theirs off. One in 10 (10%) said that they would not be wearing a mask in the first place, while 8% said they were unsure about what they would do.
