90% of British adults think it is up to manufacturers and retailers to take responsibility for recycling plastics, survey reveals

March 2022

90% of British adults think it is up to manufacturers and retailers to take responsibility for recycling plastics: A recent survey into global opinions about plastic waste has revealed that nine in ten British adults are of the opinion that retailers and manufacturers need to take responsibility for reducing, reusing and recycling plastic waste.

In addition, nine in ten Brazilian, Chinese and Mexican adults believe manufacturers and retailers should do more to combat plastic waste; with 89% of Swedes believing the same.

The study by Ipsos polled over 20,000 adults, under the age of 75, from 28 countries as part of their Global Advisor Online Platform. The survey also found that almost nine in ten (89%) Columbians think single-use plastics should be banned, followed by Chile and Mexico (88%).

On the other hand, most Japanese (63%) and many American (45%) adults believe there is still a place for single-use plastics, and it should not be banned.

When asked what measures should be put in place to prevent plastic pollution, 88% say they want an international treaty to combat the issue; with Latin American nations (93%) most likely to agree.

The poll found that a clear majority, in all countries surveyed (82%), prefer products that come with less plastic packaging. However, Japan had the lowest number of people who stated that they prefer less plastic packaging (56%), with America (71%) and the Netherlands (73%) close behind.

Stuart Clarke, Ipsos Australia director, said: "These results make it very clear that there is a strong consensus globally that single-use plastics should be taken out of circulation as quickly as possible. People want to do the right thing. An average of 82 percent of people surveyed want to buy products that minimise plastic packaging. They want that change to happen quickly and they want their governments to support it."
