58% of UK drivers want to see noise cameras rolled out across the UK: A poll motorists by the RAC has found that nearly 6 in 10 (58%) want to see noise cameras rolled out across the UK to help clamp down on illegally loud vehicles, with only 22% being against the idea. One in five respondents said they were unsure.
The poll was conducted by the RAC, who asked a series of questions about noise cameras to 1,424 motorists from the UK. The specialist cameras can detect all vehicles exceeding the 74-decibel limit through the use of several microphones. They have been on trial in Bristol, Birmingham, Bradford and Great Yarmouth since October 2022.
Further findings from the poll highlighted that a third of the respondents (34%) regularly hear loud revving engines or excessively loud exhausts, with this figure rising amongst people from London (47%) The figure was 40% for Welsh and Scottish respondents.
£50 Fine
The current on-the-spot fine for breaking the 74-decibel limit is £50. Motorists participating in the research were asked for their opinions on this figure, with 39% agreeing that the penalty fine is acceptable, although 37% said it is not. A quarter of respondents were undecided. Out of the respondents who believed that £50 was too little, nearly half (43%) said the fine should be £200, and a driving ban should be imposed until the noise is at a legal limit. This figure rose to two-thirds of Londoners (67%).
