44% of UK workers are worried their job is not secure due to Covid-19: Research looking at the effects of Covid-19 on the labour market has found 44% of workers are worried that their role is under threat, with more than a third (37%) feeling 'insecure' about their position.
The research by job search engine adzuna.co.uk polled 1,400 UK workers, finding that confidence in the UK economy and jobs market has fallen dramatically, with job vacancies falling by 55% in the last three months.
Amongst furloughed workers, job anxiety was even higher, with more than half the respondents polled (54%) feeling worried about their future. A quarter of survey respondents said that they had been furloughed by their employer during the crisis (25%).
Seven out of ten respondents (70%) said they currently feel they are lacking necessary practical support and would not feel comfortable applying for a job at the moment, and for those who earn less than £25,000 per year, that percentage was even greater (75%).
People working in hospitality and travel feel the least confident about the future of their jobs, with just 14% saying they feel secure, followed by respondents in retail (19%). Healthcare workers were found to be the most optimistic about their job security (55%).
When asked about changing their career, the survey found that 51% were less confident about finding a new job this year if they had to. Confidence was varied up and down the country, with three-quarters of people in the east of England feeling the least secure about the prospect of finding new employment should they need to, compared to 68.4% in the South West, 58.3% in London and 57.1% in Yorkshire and the Humber.
While 30% of women said they feel completely secure in their jobs, just 23% of male respondents said the same.
