41% of student tenants have considered dropping out of university, finds survey: A survey of university students has found that just over two in five have considered dropping out of university, due to high rental costs and high bills. The survey also found that 63% of students are struggling to pay their rent.
The survey of 1,869 students was conducted by Save The Student to highlight the effects of the cost-of-living crisis and how it is affecting student tenants. Save The Student also highlighted that the proportion of student tenants who are struggling to pay rent has increased by 10%, since its survey a year earlier, which highlights the worsening situation.
More findings from the survey, which was conducted at the beginning of the year, revealed that nearly 3 in 4 students (72%) reported that their physical or mental health has been affected because of rising costs. Students said that they are staying at university for longer on some days to avoid using electricity/gas at their accommodation, while half said they have stayed in bed longer than normal to help keep warm and avoid using energy. In addition, the survey found that students are losing focus on their studies because they are constantly working to try and cover costs and have enough money for essentials.
