38% of people using screens more during Covid-19 pandemic say their eyesight has worsened, reveals survey

January 2021

38% of people using screens more during Covid-19 pandemic say their eyesight has worsened: A survey of people in the UK by eye health charity, Fight for Sight has found that almost half (49%) of the 2,000 polled have used screens more since the pandemic began. It also found that of these, almost two-fifths (38%) believe their eyesight has worsened as a result.

The survey, which sought to remind people about the importance of getting their eyes tested, found that around one in five (21%) were less likely to book an optician appointment during the pandemic than they were before, due to fear of catching or spreading the virus. Just under one in ten (9%) said they were less likely to get an eye test because of the cost – believing it too expensive.

The survey found that a third of respondents (33%) have seen their screen time increase by more than 2 hours a day (up to 4 hours).

Half the students polled (50%) and 42% of working adults believe that increased screen time during the coronavirus pandemic has negatively impacted their sight.
