27% of GP partners said they have thought about handing their contract back over the last year: Recent research has uncovered that over a quarter (27%) of British GPs have considered handing back their contract over the last 12 months.
The study by Pulse polled over 800 UK GPs at the start of 2022 and uncovered that a little over 1% said they already work for a private provider on a part time basis; with even fewer stating they were employed by a private provider full time.
The Government has a target of increasing the number of GPs in Britain by 6,000, with an additional 26,000 practice staff by 2024. Furthermore, over four in 10 partner (41%) would ‘consider becoming a salaried GP if given the correct offer’.
This target was made to encourage more people to work as GPs for the NHS; with around half of GPs being salaried or locum. The main reasons cited for this change were chronic underfunding and feeling overworked.
In addition, 47% of GPs would ‘consider working for an online private GP service if the terms were acceptable’; with 9% saying they would do so on a full-time basis. On the other hand, 42% of those surveyed said they would not consider an online private GP service for employment, leaving 11% unsure.
