Zip code (market research)

ZIP codes are the equivalent of postcodes in United States. ZIP codes are assigned by the United States Postal Service and the acronym stands for Zone Improvement Plan. Standard ZIP codes are either five numbers (i.e. 80126) or five-four (i.e. 01003-9203).

Some buildings or areas in the United States have such a high volume of mail that they are assigned their own ZIP codes. This can also be true of mail which may need to be handled with care. A good example of both these issues is the White House, which has a unique ZIP code of 20500 despite the fact that it lies in the area designated 20006.

ZIP codes are often used in a similar way to postcodes are in the UK – to ensure sample is from a specific area or to ensure that certain geographical quotas are hit.
