PGI (Protected Geographical Indication)

Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) is a quality label used in the UK and EU to identify food and drink products that are closely linked to a specific place. It highlights products whose reputation, characteristics, or production methods are connected to a particular region, even if not every stage of production takes place there.

To qualify for PGI status, at least one part of the production, processing, or preparation must happen in the named location. This makes PGI more flexible than similar designations such as Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), while still offering strong protection against imitation or misuse of the name.

PGI status helps safeguard traditional skills, regional know-how, and local economies. It also gives consumers confidence that a product is genuinely associated with the place it claims to come from, rather than being a generic alternative. Well-known examples include regional meats, cheeses, baked goods, and beverages that have built their reputation over time.

For producers, PGI recognition adds commercial value, legal protection, and credibility in competitive markets. For consumers, it offers a reliable way to identify authentic products with a clear geographic story and established heritage.
