Judgement sample

Judgement sampling is a type of non-random sampling consisting of a group of respondents who have been selected on the basis that their views, characteristics, behaviour and outlook will be representative of a whole population. The sample is often selected based on the researcher’s expertise and knowledge of the population. They select individuals that best represent the objectives of the research in their opinion. A judgement sample is not guaranteed to be representative, but it is assumed given the researcher’s expert judgement.

Some key characteristics that researchers may look for when choosing their participants include their socioeconomic status and whether they are part of specific groups such as healthcare professionals, students or policy makers. It may also benefit the study if the respondents possess expertise which are relevant to the topic of research. Selecting individuals based on these factors ensures researchers focus on groups that are likely to give useful insights, improving the time and resource efficiency of the project. However, there is always the drawback that the sample might not represent the wider population.

Judgement sampling is often used when resources are limited, in-depth insights are needed or when the target population is hard to access but the specific expertise are crucial for obtaining meaningful data. This sampling method can be helpful in product development. Gathering opinions from experts within specific demographics can improve the quality of the data collected and ensures the findings are actionable and aligned with market needs. It is also commonly used in the education and medical and healthcare sectors.
