Closed question

Closed question

A closed question (or closed-ended question) is a question that can only be answered in one of a set of predetermined ways. Common formats include yes/no responses, multiple-choice selections, or rating scales (e.g. “Rate your satisfaction from 1 to 5”).

Closed questions are designed to produce structured, quantifiable data that is easier to analyse statistically. They are particularly useful for identifying patterns, comparing groups, and measuring trends across a large sample.

Closed questions differ from open questions (open-ended questions), which allow respondents to answer in their own words, providing richer qualitative insight. Both types of questions are important tools in questionnaire design, with closed questions offering clarity and consistency and open questions capturing depth and nuance.

In market research, combining closed and open questions often provides the most comprehensive understanding of respondents’ behaviours, attitudes, and preferences.
